Updating your MONEY MINDSET

I’ve worked with many clients who have struggled with their mindset around money. I can tell you very truthfully, what you believe you can earn is what you will ultimately end up earning.

That is why when a new business owner enters through my door one of the first questions I ask is: give me the figure you want to be earning.

A surprising amount of people will give me a figure that is just higher than survival.

When given complete freedom to dream and set their target, people still tend towards the comfortable, rather than the extraordinary.

Make no mistake, you can earn absolutely anything. It is your choice what your target is. You are the one who designs the goal posts.

What’s Stopping You

There are many limiting money beliefs I have come across in my years as a business coach.

The biggest obstacles are these:

  • Money is evil. If you believe money is evil, then it is likely you are avoiding it, to protect yourself from being a ‘bad person’. Money is not evil. It is like electricity: you can kill someone with it and cook your dinner with it.
  • Making Money is hard. As soon as you tell yourself you can’t do something, that is your stopping point. If you are going to approach money as a difficulty, it is going to be that difficulty.
  • I don’t want money to change me. Money is often used as an identity point. You create a narrative around it to shield yourself from who you don’t want to be. Try asking yourself, does having money go against my values?

Internal and external state of money

Your mindset is the conditions in which your reality will grow. It is also the thing you have one hundred percent control over.

Your mindset forms your internal state of money. Your immediate actions form the external state of money.

If your internal state is one of negativity, you will act externally with excuses and blame: “I haven’t made a lot of money because of the economy, or my competition making pricing so low.”

If your internal state is one of responsibility and empowerment, your external world will look a lot like upskilling:

“There is so much I can learn to grow my money. There are so many resources out there. My business has a lot of opportunity for growth.”

Shifting our money mindset: Skills

Directly following your mindset are the skills you use in your business.

I often ask my clients: What would be the first thing you’d like to know about money. I do not mean a vague thing, but rather a specific skill that they can use.

A recurring starting skill is to force business owners to look at their numbers.

Healthy Beliefs

So, what type of mentality should you be cultivating?

We encourage you to develop a mindset of abundance. Whatever it is you desire, there is enough wealth in this world for you to have it.

Set yourself a target, and begin investing in your skills, time and money towards it.
